The Descendants of DeWitty, NE would like to introduce our project. We are a non-profit corporation in Nebraska 501(c)3 status. On April 11, 2016, the state of Nebraska Historical Society honored DeWitty, with a Historical Marker on Highway 83, acknowledging the significance of DeWitty, NE. We are now six years young. Our programs includes, a 12-piece and 25 - piece Traveling Photo Exhibit and Historical Reenactment, for museums and small venues. A Lesson Plan for elementary students that meets the Common Core Curriculum Standards including a teacher guide that correlates with our Historical Reenactment. We created an 8 - minute Animated Presentation on the Humanities Nebraska Speaker Bureau website under Virtual Tours. We are expanding our program to include technology which includes the Meta verse. Our vision is to develop a virtual reality game about the Descendants of Dewitty, Ne. Our Historical Reenactment and Photo exhibits has been presented at Creighton University, Metropolitan Community College, Great Plains Black History Museum, Peru State College, Cherry County Historical Museum, Homestead National Monument of America, Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, University of Nebraska Omaha, Broken Bow Historical Society, Valentine Historical Society, Hastings Museum, Norfolk Library, Nebraska Wesleyan Lincoln, Cass County Historical Society, Nebraska History Museum Omaha Public Schools, and Durham Museum in 2023. Our mission is to Promote and Maintain the History of our Ancestors through Research, Education and Outreach.

A Mural of the DeWitty settlement cost is based on intricacy of design, space, materials, and hours to complete task. Suggested locations Wakonda Elementary School @ 4845 Curtis Ave Omaha, Ne 68104 or Druid Hill Elementary School @ 4020 N 30th Omaha, Ne 68111. Timeline not available currently. The Wall Mural estimates cost 20ft x 31ft x $10 per square foot total $6400. The Street sign estimated cost $200 x work hours to install by City of Omaha. Timeline not available currently or location. The after-school program would meet twice a week - two hour - duration six weeks to complete project. We would also incorporate DeWitty’s Historical Reenactment and Photo Exhibit into both projects listed above to emphasize theme and outcomes. Wakonda Elementary is DOD adopted school we have build a relationship with staff and students. Timeline not available currently. We have collaborated with the Culxr House @ 3014 N 24 Street Omaha, Ne 68110 with Photo exhibits and Historical Reenactment. Our 25-Piece Photo Exhibit and Historical Reenactment has been on display in Museums and Small Venues it serves as a reminder of the African Americans contribution to the state of Nebraska. It is our hope that this project will inspire another person or family to begin researching their individual family history to locate and identify their humble beginnings. We will continue to show how our great grandfather’s dream of land ownership and education continues to play a part in the lives of his current day Descendants. The Mural, Street Sign and the DeWitty presentation and photo exhibit will serve as a Historical salute to our ancestors and to Black achievements in Nebraska. DOD legacy proves that we can have sustainable communities. In addition to educational training that provided a standard of quality life in DeWitty. Our story is still relevant today in generating entrepreneurs.

The After - School proposal aligns with Community Programming hands – on training for students to assist with social skills through the Art of Cursive Writing a skill no longer provided through Omaha Public Schools in addition to Multicultural Crafting while introducing Descendants of Dewitty, Ne Historical present in Nebraska as Educator and Economic Developers. This project will include healthy snacks to supplement food shortages in the home. The Mural project promotes active learning and development through teamwork. These skills will introduce students to the importance of collaboration and networking to build stronger communities.

The Wall Mural would be a reminder of the contributions that Black individuals made in the expansion of the Great Plains in Nebraska. The Mural can be used as a Reference Site for the Great Plains Black History Museum when discussing Nebraska History. OPS can also feature this site via Zoom presentations when teaching Nebraska history. Metropolitan Community College and other Higher Learning entities can also take advantage of the Mural.

We will encourage entrepreneurship this leads to ownership within the community thus contributing to economic freedom.

The projects listed above is to honor our Ancestors it’s not considered laboring it’s the commitment to acknowledge their achievements in Nebraska.
